Write a commentHistoric Fort Ontario is set to host the world premiere of an original comic operetta, thanks in part to a grant awarded by the CNY Arts Statewide Community Regrants program.
The new work, The 1812 Underture, is co-written by native Oswegonians Nicholas Gentile, Sarah Galvin, and Kathryn Donovan (collectively known as The Hysterical Society) and will be staged in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation on September 22nd and 23rd, 2023.
The side-splitting operetta is being produced in conjunction with the Oswego Opera Theater, the Oswego Players, CNY Community Arts Center, and Friends of Fort Ontario.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with these fantastic organizations and all the lovely, talented people involved,” said Kathryn Donovan. “And we’re ecstatic to welcome Kevin Siembor back to Oswego to amaze the community with his stunning voice!”
After living and performing in Chicago for the last twenty years, Kevin R. Siembor is returning to the local stage as the lead tenor in The 1812 Underture. Lauded for his vocal prowess, Siembor has played many of Gilbert and Sullivan's leading tenors, including Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S Pinafore and Frederic in Pirates of Penzance. Both of these comic operettas inspired The Hysterical Society to pursue the more lighthearted, less lengthy form of traditional opera.
Nicholas Gentile made The Hysterical Society’s intentions clear: “We want to entertain, not
edify,” he said. “You won’t learn a thing, we promise.”
“And don’t worry, it’s in English,” added Sarah Galvin.
