OCATF Offers Autism Spectrum Disorder Workshop March 18th

The Oswego County Autism Taskforce (OCATF) is bringing another valuable workshop for parents and educators this March entitled, “The Hidden Curriculum AND Meltdowns in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.” The conference will be presented by Brenda Myles, Ph.D, a consultant with the Ohio Center for Autism.

The workshop planned for Friday, March 18 from 9:00-4:00 p.m. at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego is a project that O.C.A.T.F. is bringing to Oswego County in their continuous efforts to enhance the lives of those touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). “Having someone as gifted and experienced as Brenda Myles present to our community is an opportunity that parents, caregivers, and service providers alike will not want to miss,” noted OCATF President, Tammy Thompson.

“The Hidden Curriculum” refers to a set of rules or guidelines that are often not taught to children with ASD. Practical tips for teaching such needs to both children and adults focusing on social interactions, school performance, and health and well-being, as well as unspoken rules, slang, metaphors, body language will be presented.

The session will also overview the manifestation of stress and the stages of a that can sometimes lead to meltdown with individual with ASD and offer evidence-based strategies and preventative measures.

Brenda Myles, Ph.D is also the recipient of the Autism Society of America’s Outstanding Professional Award, the Princeton Fellowship Award, the Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Award, The American Academy of Pediatrics Autism Champion, and the two-time recipient of the Council for Exceptional Children Humanitarian Award. She has done over 1000 presentations all over the world and written more than 250 articles and books on ASD.
