There’s Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. Did you know that there’s also #GivingTuesday?

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving – November 29 - is #GivingTuesday, a global giving movement with a hyper-local focus that has been driven by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in all 50 states and in countries around the world. Since its founding in 2012, millions of people have come together to support and champion the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live.

Oswego Mayor William Barlow, Jr., has issued a proclamation designating November 29 as #GivingTuesday and recognizing the good that can be accomplished when “people give whatever they are able to give.”

After a weekend of holiday shopping deals, #GivingTuesday is a day for giving back. In dozens of towns, cities, regions and states from Alaska to Maine, and Charlotte NC to Dallas TX, people are embracing this day as an opportunity to raise money for local nonprofits, schools and arts organizations; run food and clothing drives; teach children about philanthropy; encourage acts of kindness; collaborate with their neighbors; and celebrate generosity.

Oswego County Opportunities is participating in #GivingTuesday. Please visit www.oco.org for more information on OCO’s home page. “We encourage everyone who donates to print out the ‘unselfie’ sign and write in their reason for giving to OCO,” said Margaret Barclay, OCO’s Development Coordinator, who is pictured with the mayor in the accompanying photo. “Then, take an ‘unselfie’ – which is called that because you have just done an unselfish act of giving! – and post it online for the world to see.”

“Did you know? Oswego County Opportunities is celebrating 50 years of service to the Oswego County community in 2016,” said OCO Executive Director Diane Cooper-Currier. “As our 50th celebration year draws to a close, OCO continues to look forward with more than 50 diverse programs and services that help move people along the on-ramp to prosperity.”
