March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and I feel strongly about sharing how important it is to get screened for colorectal cancer.
It’s so easy, and there is no reason to put it off.
I did put getting screened off because I don’t have insurance. But I learned about the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of the North Country and got it done through them. I’ll never put it off again. They taught me that colorectal cancer could be prevented with regular screening and is easier to treat if it’s found early.
There are a few ways to be screened, but the CSP gave me a FIT (fecal immunochemical test) kit. It was easy to do, and I liked that I could do it at home. When I finished the kit, I just sent it to a lab. That’s it! Thankfully, my test came back normal. Now, I’ll just do the test every year to make sure I stay healthy. If there ever is a problem, the CSP will pay for more testing and help me to get treatment if I do have cancer.
If you are aged 45 or older, talk to your doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer. If you don’t have insurance, call the CSP at 855-592-0830 to see if you qualify for free cancer screening.
