The Oswego High School varsity football team nearly came home with a road win Friday night while the golf team continued to do well on the links with two wins. Meanwhile, the boys jayvee soccer team remained unbeaten.

Buc gridders do battle

It was an offensive explosion between the Oswego and New Hartford football teams Friday night, Sept. 13.

With less than three minutes remaining the Bucs held the lead. However, Steve Tomaino ran in from nine yards out and a point after was successful as New Hartford rallied for a 31-28 victory.

The Bucs got off to an early lead as Alex Makin ran it in from 10 yards out. However, by the end of the first quarter the home team had put 14 points on the board with a Dustin Deon one yard run and an 81 yard pass play from Adam Zobgy to Tomaino for a 14-6 lead.

Things did not appear bright for the Bucs as Tarik Kulosman kicked a 22-yard field goal in the second half for a 17-6 lead.

However, the Bucs rallied behind a one yard touchdown run by Garrett Dunsmoor and a two yard scoring run by Makin as the score at half time was 20-17 in favor of the Bucs.

New Hartford had the lone score in the third quarter with Tomaino running over from eight yards out and the kick was good.

Entering the final 12 minutes the Bucs trailed 24-20. Ryan Lavner gave Oswego the lead with an eight yard scoring jaunt and then he ran it over for two points after for a 28-24 advantage.

Oswego played solidly, but gave up a late home team score to fall to 0-2 on the year.

The Bucs will host Carthage this Friday at Joe Wilber Field with kick off scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Jayvee soccer victory

The Oswego boys jayvee soccer team continued their successful season as they won a hard fought game at Red Creek by a score of 3-2 to move to 4-0 on the season.

Red Creek got on the scoreboard first early in the game off a corner kick. The Bucs responded about midway through the first half when Hunter Mazuroski tucked the ball into the right hand corner of the Red Creek goal from inside the 18. Unfortunately for the Bucs, Red Creek responded with a goal of their own just seconds later to again take the lead 2-1. For the remainder of the half both teams saw opportunities, but neither could cash in and the half ended with the hosts ahead 2-1.

In the second half, Red Creek came out and controlled much of the flow of the game.

However, the Buc defenders led by keeper Carson Smith (9 saves) were able to limit the number of dangerous opportunities for the hosts. Near the halfway point of the second half, the Bucs were awarded a corner kick. As the ball was cleared out of the Red Creek 18 yard box, it fell at the feet of defender John Khamis who lofted the ball back into the 18, over the head of the Red Creek goalie and into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. The game remained tied until the Bucs were awarded a penalty kick with just 4:30 left in the game for a handball inside the Red Creek 18 yard box. Martin Orta then finished off the play by beating the Red Creek goalie to his right, giving the Bucs their final 3-2 margin of victory.

"This game was a testament to the hard work the boys have been putting in at practices this season," Coach Don Fronk said. "Both teams only had 14 players, so the winning team was going to be the team with the better fitness level. The boys have committed themselves to maintaining a high level of fitness due to our low numbers, and that commitment is paying dividends for them."
