OP ED: Open Letter to Oswego Residents

Oswego has had its challenges since its inception: Most recently, its struggle to reinvent itself with the context of being a post-industrial city.

However, the positive energy heard, seen and chattered about recently has unveiled that our resilience as a people has not been diminished. The cooperation between government, business and the people is real, and in my opinion absolutely essential to our continued wellbeing.

This collaborative interaction between local business and city government is a mere snapshot of what is going on at every level of government. The mesh between the two ought to be embraced and strengthened, as the obvious alliance is here to stay.

The restoration, renovation and resurgence of our neighborhoods is an example of a renaissance of enormous proportions. The involvement of a foundation, a local bank and a committed group of individuals who collectively reach out to our residents is an exercise in collaboration that clearly illustrates our ability as a small city to meet and exceed any challenge.

The continued leadership of our youthful and energetic mayor, and an extremely aware and competent Common Council, are necessary components to maintain and drive the success of our endeavors.

It may be the case that Oswego’s demographics have changed. We have become more diverse in our population and it is necessary that we accept and welcome individuals from all walks of life — there is no room for discrimination against anyone. A city’s unique character and identity stem from its diversity. It is the ability of a city to work within the context of these differences, welcoming diversity and providing necessary support, which will allow Oswego to thrive.

As we move forward, there must be an expectation that all citizens be responsible and work within the laws set forth. Adherence and compliance as good citizens and stewards of the community should be the rule and not the exception.

It is my sincere hope that recent enforcement efforts are only the beginning. The rules, regulations and laws provide the framework for accountability, and strict enforcement allows us the privilege of a quality of life afforded to everyone who chooses Oswego as their home.

They say the attitude determines altitude; if that is true, Oswego is positioning itself to soar.
