Oswego City School District Board of Education Summer Meeting

     The Oswego City School District Board of Education conducted its July 22 meeting at the Education Center Curriculum Center.

     Superintendent of Schools Benjamin Halsey noted that the search for two elementary school principals was continuing as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Dean Goewey and Personnel Director Peter Myles would be moving forward in the hiring process. Frederick Leighton Elementary School and Minetto Elementary School principal positions are vacant. Julie Burger will be retiring from FLS in early September while the hiring of Dr. Goewey to his new position would mean that for the time being he will also be the interim principal at Minetto.

     The desire is to have new persons in the principal positions as soon as possible.

     The personnel portion of the agenda had a substantial number of resolutions.

     Approval was granted for the posting of several vacancies including two regular substitute elementary teachers at Frederick Leighton and Fitzhugh Park, spring coaching positions, a school psychologist, district clerk, a cook and registered nurses for one-on-one at Oswego High School and Minetto Elementary.

     The board approved the retirements of school psychologist Noel LaPoint and district clerk Bill Foley.

     The resignation of special education teacher Tara Visca was accepted while leaves of absences were granted to teachers Michelle Baroody (9/1/14-2/1/15), Chris Castiglia (9/1/14-6/30/15) and Scott Bandla (9/1/14-6/30/15).

     Kristen Jorgensen was appointed as a music teacher for Charles E. Riley and Fitzhugh Park effective on September 1.  Carole Lloyd was appointed as a mathematics teacher at OMS while Jay-Nel Steitz is now an English teacher at OHS. Nikki Cary was appointed as a special education teacher at OMS and Stacie Roberts was approved as an OMS teacher assistant.

     Five persons were hired as regular substitutes for the entire 2014-15 school year. Casey Lawton will be at OMS as an English teacher; Jill Voigt-Anzalone (special education) at Fitzhugh Park, Abigail Delia (elementary) at Charles E. Riley, Alexandra Ackerman (elementary)  and Nicholas Little (elementary) at Fitzhugh Park.

     Approval was also given for David Sugar and Jill Voigt-Anzalone, two summer special programs speech teachers.

     Team leaders were approved and included Linda Shannon (art), Lori Bradway-Veiga (foreign language), Kenn Kern and Jamie Sykut (home & Career and Technology), Mary Alice Brunell (library), Cheryl Rogers (music) and Christina Chamberlain (registered professional school nurses).

     Jennifer Szkotak and Tanya Wadsworth were selected as team leaders for Minetto as part of a BOCES grant while Kathleen Zerrahn was approved as an after school homework supervisor for FLS. Peg Holt, Carole Lloyd, Roshmi Mishra and Samantha Spaulding were approved for OMS after school study table supervisors.

     There were several support staff recommendations.

     John Anderson was appointed as a school security officer effective on Sept. 1.

     Kathy Forger was granted a leave of absence as a part-time teacher aide at FPS for the entire upcoming school year.

     Denise Spinelli will serve on the Summer Feeding Program as a part-time food service helper.  Tyler Broadwell was approved as a custodial worker at transportation.

     The board also accepted the resignation of cook Darlene Buske effective on July 21.

     Finance resolutions included approval of the continuing agreement between Farnham Family Services and the district, the settlement with Oswego Development LLC vs. City of Oswego tax certiorari matters, the agreement between Oswego Health and the district, as well as a budgetary transfer of funds.

     In the curriculum area of the agenda the board approved a summer grant proposal revision and two textbooks.

     The next round of committee meetings and a brief regular meeting of the Oswego City School District Board of Education will be conducted on Tuesday, August 12 at the Education Center in the second floor curriculum room.
