Students from Oswego County school districts competed in the last Oswego County Academic Youth League (OCAY) competition of the year, which centered on the theme of leaving a legacy and living a memorable life.
The event involved tasks such as creating and illustrating a children’s book, performing a silent drama and giving an inspirational speech. True teamwork was demonstrated as the students delegated the work based on their individual skill sets to divide and conquer.
The theme of the dramatic performance was “A Life Well Lived.” Each team had to come up with a physical drama performance that had to incorporate at least four members of the team, last no longer than two minutes in length and used no dialogue or props I any way. Judging was on a rubric based on logistics, artistry, message, emotional appeal and overall presentation.
In third place was the Oswego City School District team, followed by the Sandy Creek Central School District team in second. Mexico Academy and Central School took first place for this competition.
After the medals were distributed, the OCAY League teams took turns selecting through an assortment of items that will be placed in a time capsule box for next year’s teams to use.
The Oswego City School District team was awarded the honor of season champions and received the travelling trophy, which will be held at their high school until the last competition of next season.
OCAY League is coordinated through the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation’s (CiTi) gifted and talented program.
