The Oswego County Tourism Office is celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week from May 4 to 10!
The annual recognition serves to highlight the essential role of tourism in driving economic growth, creating jobs and enhancing the quality of life across the country.
“The travel industry is essential to the success of every other industry by driving sales growth and employment,” said Oswego County Tourism Deputy Director Daniel Breitweg. “Tourism spending has a significant impact on Oswego County’s economy, and visitors love to come here to experience our outstanding trophy fishing, abundance of natural resources and fun events and attractions. We’re happy to once again recognize National Travel and Tourism Week and spotlight what makes Oswego County a great travel destination.”
According to the most recent data available, Oswego County’s visitor spending totaled $228 million in 2023, a 7.5% increase from 2022. In 2023, the tourism industry generated over $26 million in state and local taxes, and over 2,700 jobs were supported by direct and indirect tourism spending.
Many attractions, such as the Oswego Speedway and the Salmon River Fish Hatchery, bring thousands of visitors to Oswego County each year. One of the biggest draws, fishing lures in sportsmen and women from around the world. In 2018, Oswego County sold more than 30,000 out-of-state and international fishing licenses, more than any other county in New York.
Exciting opportunities continue to happen in Oswego County. This year, Oswego County was featured on “Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid,” highlighting the area’s community life, education, and vast business and recreational opportunities.
Various attractions, popular events, arts and culture, history and more are showcased in the Oswego County Visitor Guide. It was recently updated to add new photos and more information about the Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary, the Underground Railroad and other updates.
Along with the Visitor Guide, readers can also pick up the Oswego County Fishing and Hunting Guide. It highlights the vast fishing opportunities on eastern Lake Ontario, Oneida Lake, the Oswego and Salmon rivers and a variety of other tributaries as well as the more than 40,000 acres of public lands available for hunting.
