Libraries across Oswego County joined forces this fall to support local families in need by collecting 3,456 diapers and nine packs of wipes for the Oswego County Diaper Bank as part of the statewide Great Give Back initiative.

The Great Give Back is an annual project organized by the North Country Library System (NCLS) that empowers libraries to give back to their communities through acts of service and kindness. This year, Oswego County libraries chose to support the Oswego County Diaper Bank, an initiative within the Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance that provides an emergency supply of 50 diapers per month, per child, to families struggling to afford this basic necessity.

Since its launch, the Oswego County Diaper Bank has received a total of 26,473 diapers through donations, allowing the program to stretch its initial seed funding for nearly two years.“We are so grateful for the partnership and generosity shown by our local libraries and their members,” said Sidney Carter, Coordinator of the Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance. “Diapers are an essential need for families with young children, and this donation will help children in our county stay clean, healthy, and comfortable.”

Participating libraries included the Oswego Public Library, Fulton Public Library, Phoenix Public Library, Central Square Library, Hannibal Free Library, Mexico Public Library, Orwell-Cogswell Free Library, Parish Public Library, Pulaski Public Library, Sandy Creek - Ainsworth Memorial Library, and the Williamstown Library; each hosting collection boxes and encouraging visitors to contribute throughout the month.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of our patrons,” said Caroline Chatterton, Fulton Public Library Director. “Every package of diapers donated represents a family in our community getting the support they need, and we’re proud to play a small part in that."

Since launching in June of 2024, the Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance’s Diaper Bank has distributed over 31,000 diapers to families throughout the county.
