Oswego County Onion Growers is holding its meeting June 25 at 5 p.m. at the John Dunsmoor Farm.
The two-hour meeting will provide crucial, in-season research to aid the onion growers of Oswego County in their management decisions to keep them profitable. The meeting will also emphasize strategies to prevent economic loss from problem weeds and bacterial rot damage.
Christine Hoepting, vegetable specialist from the Onions, Cabbage Cornell Vegetable Program at Cornell University, will discuss her field experiences utilizing different practices to control problematic weeds in onions. Hoepting will provide recommendations on integrated pest management strategies for their control. Her talk includes a presentation titled “Strategies to Control Problem Weeds in Onions.”
Dr. Steven Beer will discuss some of his latest research titled “Understanding What is Causing Onion Bacterial Rot ” which includes onion bacterial rot pathogens and agriculture growing practices that growers can utilize to reduce center rot and sour skin in onions, an expensive issue for growers.
Two New York State Recertification Credits have been approved in categories 1a, 10 and 23. Participants are encouraged to bring their pesticide ID card.
