The City of Oswego observed the 2024 Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend with a ceremony at Fire Department headquarters on Friday.

On-duty and off-duty Firefighters and police officers were in attendance, along with retirees, city counselors and other officials, as well as family members of some of the fallen.

Fire Chief Paul Conzone spoke to those gathered, reminding his Firefighters and those gathered that, “...This job is inherently a dangerous one. Firefighters are going to be killed or injured.”

Conzone continued, “We need to continually be at our best, physically, mentally and in our training. We owe it to ourselves and those we serve.”

The Chief spoke respectfully of those whose lives had been lost in the line of duty, especially Firefighter Edward A. Maxon and Fighter Scott Davis, whose family members were present.

Mayor Rob Corradino then addressed the audience saying, “We owe these Fallen Firefighters and their families a debt of gratitude.”

Corradino, who issued a proclamation earlier this week naming May 1-5, 2024 as Fallen Firefighters Weekend in the City of Oswego, spoke highly of the Fire Department's long history of service.

The ceremony concluded with a traditional tribute to fallen firefighters, the ringing of the alarm bell. As Chief Conzone read the names of each of Oswego’s ten Fallen members, a firefighter rang the ceremonial bell three times.

Following the conclusion of the ceremony,  a reception was held at the newly reorganized John D. Murray Oswego Firefighters Museum adjacent to the fire station. Visitors were guided by Museum volunteer Cory King, who has been instrumental in updating the Museum's collections.
