Marjorie Wentworth, owner of Paws and Effect Inc., published her first children's book, "The Ball" with the help of author, Margaret Streitenberger, and local illustrator, Jim Arnold.
The three connected through Wentworth's business, Paws and Effect, and the story grew from there. When Wentworth's first granddaughter was born, she desired to write a book for her. Since then, she has had four granddaughters in the past four years.
"The Ball is about a toy that means something much more to a community then just a throw away piece of trash," Wentworth explained. "The theme is basically what is unimportant to one may be a treasure to others. I was thrilled when Jim animated my three granddaughters on the dedication page as mice and also placed them in the story."
Although the book was inspired by her granddaughter, she said it was her dogs that helped nail down the book's theme.
"In my ultimate dog days, I've come to realize that people just throw away things like dogs and in the book's case, toys, and people like me pick them up as treasures. My dogs I've adopted are a part of my family and my treasures," Wentworth said.
Paws and Effect is where these beloved dogs of her come from. Wentworth owned and operated this dog grooming business for the past 25 years. The business just finished a successful Open House and Animal Rescue Fundraiser on April 25, with a total of $15,000 raised for Paws Across Oswego County (PAOC). PAOC, a non-profit animal rescue organization based in Oswego, also announced the newest addition to its community outreach services, 4 Paws Thrift Store.
A book signing will take place from 2-4 p.m., May 11, at river's end bookstore, 19 W. Bridge St. Streitenberger will also discuss her recent book, "A House in a House in a House," the second in her Hey Diddle Diddle series.
"For this event, we call it Pets are Welcome (Parents and Kids, Too!)," Bill Reilly, owner of the book store, with a laugh. "They just need to be on a leash (the pets, not the parents) and there will be refreshments, too."
Wentworth's "The Ball" is available to purchase at rivers end bookstore and online at tailsandtales.com. All funds raised from "The Ball" will be donated to the Paws Across Oswego County program.
