In a quarterly recognition program jointly sponsored by the Division III Sports Information Directors of America (D3SIDA) and the NCAA, the Oswego State sports information office was awarded honorable mention for its compositions.

An article from Case Western College was selected by a panel of sports information directors representing D3SIDA as the most impressive work published during the months of September-December 2012. However, McDaniel College and Oswego State were the only other schools recognized for exceptional work, which encompasses: news releases, feature articles, videos, blogs, and other materials generated by Division III conference and campus athletics communications offices.
The piece that specifically attracted the attention of the NCAA and D3SIDA members was an article by Tom Loughrey. The article shares the story of Chris Gilkes, a senior forward on the men's basketball team during the 2012-13 season. Loughrey's article shared Gilkes' struggles, which included an absent father, a shaky relationship with his mother, and becoming a father himself during his senior year of high school.

NCAA Division III Vice President, Daniel Dutcher released a statement saying:

"We believe the feature, titled "Chris Gilkes: Powering Forward," is among the best work – including news releases, feature articles, videos, blogs and other materials – produced in the Division III membership from September to December 2012."
