Write a commentThe Oz Roller Derby will debut the fast-moving, physical sport of co-ed renegade roller derby in the Port City Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Oswego YMCA Armory. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with the bout beginning at 6 p.m.
Renegade roller derby is similar to, yet very different from, most popular versions of roller derby played in Upstate New York. Renegade derby is identified as 'No Rules' derby because there are no penalties assigned to skaters. Timing, scoring, blocking and general gameplay are all very similar to other forms of derby. Some key differences include no stopping on the track, player takedowns and the fact that both male and female skaters compete in the same bout. Spectators find this form of derby easy to understand, fast-paced and very exciting.
League founder Victoria Usherwood Gailinas and her husband Phil, the team's coach, introduced Oswego to female roller derby in 2010 with the formation of the Oz Roller Girls. Bringing co-ed renegade derby to the Port City is yet another opportunity for Oswegonians to enjoy the exciting sport of roller derby.
"We continue to offer fast-paced, family-friendly, exciting entertainment that brings a mix of skill, speed, strength and teamwork," Gailinas said. "We have men and women of many ages, backgrounds and walks of life who enjoy the physical challenge, the competition, the fun and being part of our roller derby family."
Tickets are $7; children 10 and younger are free. Tickets will be available at the door or online at www.OzRollerDerby.com.
