The fall production by the JCB Drama Club, "She Kills Monsters" by Qui Nguyen, is a teenage dramedy (dramatic-comedy) which tells the story of one sister trying to deal with the loss of her younger sister.
When Agnes finds Tilly's DUNGEONS & DRAGONS notebook, she places herself in the world of fantasy role-playing games, finding adventures full of killer fairies, unpleasant monsters and chock full of 90s pop culture references. The play is heart-pounding, heart-breaking and heart-warming as the audience learns, along with Agnes, that geeks and warriors can exist in the same person.
John C. Birdlebough's Drama Club is extraordinarily proud to present a play unlike any other they have done in the past. It is modern, filled with cool 90s music, darkly lit combat scenes, layered characters and a setting that is definitely not always what it seems. Some disclaimers - the play does feature some light swearing, in-your-face monsters and some gory sequences, so it is suited for a tween to teenage and adult audience. Young children may be frightened by the monster and battle scenes. There is also a very modern take on relationships.
This is a rocking, fun and fast production - at just 100 minutes long, there will NOT be an intermission. That is why JCB Drama Club is super excited to present a twist on the concessions aspect - after the Thursday show, there will be a meet and greet along with snacks, Monster Mocktails, beverages and merchandise for sale in the cafeteria. BEFORE the Friday and Saturday night showings, ticket holders, families and community members are invited to come at 5:30 to enjoy these refreshments (including the Monster Mocktails!) and purchase merchandise.
Show dates and times are Thursday, November 2nd at 4:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3rd and 4th at 7:30 pm. General Admission tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students. Tickets may be purchased in advance by emailing Lspereno@phoenixcsd.org or visiting https://www.showtix4u.com/events/JCBDramaClub and paying a small fee online to use a credit card. Tickets will also be available at the door (payable by cash or check) for each show. All performances will be in the JCB Auditorium (John C Birdlebough High School, 552 Main Street, Phoenix, NY).
