The return of summer means more crowded events and celebrations such as firework displays.
The Oswego County Health Department offers residents tips to ensure a fun and safe viewing experience for all.
“It’s important to remember that fireworks can cause anxiety in some family members, including pets,” said Oswego County Associate Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg. “Sudden, loud noises and bright lights at night can startle pets and may cause confusion or panic. When animals are scared, they may bite or try to run away.”
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), fear is the biggest motivator for dog bites. Dogs who feel anxious are much more likely to act out aggressively at perceived threats.
“It’s best to leave the fireworks to professionals and keep your animals at home during celebrations,” said Oswego County Director of Environmental Health Katelyn Parkhurst.
Before fireworks begin, try these steps to help calm your pets:
- Keep your pet in a place where they feel safe.
- Keep windows closed and covered with curtains to help block noise and bright lights.
- Turn on a TV or radio to help cover the sound of fireworks.
- Keep your pet occupied inside by playing with their favorite toys and treats.
- Stay close to your pet.
If your pet continues to show signs of high stress and anxiety, talk with your veterinarian about further steps you can take.
