There is nothing we enjoy more at iHeart Oswego than New York State's Maple Weekends at the Red Schoolhouse Maple Farm in Fulton, N.Y. The farm held “A Taste Of Maple” Cook-Off on March 17 and 18, and again March 24 and 25 for four days of fantastic maple memories.
The Maple Farm featured pancake breakfasts every weekend from 8 a.m. until noon. Fluffy pancakes doused in real maple syrup with sausage, orange juice, maple coffee and tea delighted the breakfast crowd. The sugar house was so packed it was standing-room only at times.
“A Taste of Maple” Cook-Off began at 12 and featured samples of sweet and savory dishes made with 100% real maple syrup. Guests at the maple farm tasted and voted on their favorite for free. Samples were donated by local restaurants and caterers, including Kathy’s Cakes and Specialty Treats, Chelle’s Bake Shop, Provisions Catering, Joslin Farms, Bishop’s Commons, Kristen’s at Battle Island, Abientot, and Debbie’s Hash and Mash Cafe.
During the first weekend, Kathy's Cakes and Specialty Treats won the sweet category. Their Maple Walnut Fudge scored Kathy’s their third consecutive win for three years.
Maple Bacon Wrapped Dates made by Provisions Catering took first prize in the savory category the first weekend as well, a delicious dish served hot or cold!
“There are endless treats to create using pure maple syrup and maple sugar,” Said Kathy Hotaling, owner and head baker at Kathy's Cakes & Specialty Treats. We can’t wait to see Kathy and her crew competing next year during Maple Weekends 2019!
Krista Dahar and Aaron Standish are the proprietors of Provisions Catering in Fulton, N.Y. This is their first time competing in New York State Maple Weekends. We hope to see Provisions Catering compete next year, too.
During the second week, Provisions Catering won the savory category unanimously! No one could compete with the delicious Maple-Smoked Turkey with maple sauce they made.
Chelle’s Bake Shop from Oswego, N.Y. won the sweet category during the second weekend with her Maple Blonde Brownies with walnuts and maple cream frosting. Chelle’s Bake Shop is owned and operated by Michelle (Chelle) McVey.
The girls scouts made several appearances over the two weekends as well. A great big thank you to Christina Dix of Volney Multiplex Security Systems, leader of Girl Scout Troop 10704 & & Daisy Troop 60243, who provided kids crafts in the form of “stained glass” maple leaves created out of tissue paper and glue.
Handcrafted necklaces were the hidden star this weekend! Kathy Campbell from Palermo crafts jewelry, hats, and a number of other items sold at Red Schoolhouse. The necklaces featured a metal pendant and a slice of maple wood for essential oils to soak into. There are still many more available for purchase at the farm, so make sure to swing by and pick one up before they’re gone!
“We have some surprises for you! We were so excited with the positive reaction this year that we want to expand the cook-off, so be sure to come again next year to see new progress and old friends,” Said Kim Enders, owner of Red Schoolhouse Maple Farm.
