Following this week’s report from the New York State Department of Health, indicating that at least 545 Central New York nursing home workers were infected with COVID-19 and unknowingly spread the disease to residents, U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) released the following statement renewing his call for an independent and thorough review of New York State’s nursing home policy:

“In Central New York, nursing home residents account for nearly half of our community’s COVID-19 related deaths. It’s extremely troubling to learn that at least 545 local nursing home workers were infected with COVID-19, and likely spread the virus to residents due to guidance from New York State. It is more clear than ever that an independent review is warranted of New York State’s fragmented and shifting policies surrounding care in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For years, my parents and in-laws received excellent care in assisted living facilities in our community. Families with loved ones currently in nursing homes aren’t getting the answers they deserve. New York State is putting lives in jeopardy, and with COVID-19 cases on the rise across our nation, we must ensure our seniors are protected.”

Background:

  • Last month, Rep. Katko led an effort urging the New York State Attorney General to launch an independent review of the origins of New York’s State’s devastating nursing home policy. The full text of the request can be found here.
  • More recently, with COVID-19 cases continuing to spike across the country, Rep. Katko introduced the COVID PREPARE Act. This bipartisan legislation works to ensure the Administration and Federal Government are fully prepared to respond to this crisis, and future COVID-19 resurgences.
