The Friends of Mexico Point Park would like to invite the public to a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new Handicap Accessible Trail at Mexico Point State Park.
The Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 9th at 3:00 pm at Mexico Point State Park. The new limestone hardened trail will allow people of all ages, with wheelchairs, walkers or baby carriages to travel easily from the parking lot to the shore of Lake Ontario, and along the lakeshore, culminating at a beautiful new butterfly garden. There are also spurs from the main trail to the Pavilion, restrooms, and picnic area, with easy access to the benches along the lakeshore to view the lake.
In spring of 2022, The Friends of Mexico Point Park were awarded a $30,592 matching grant from the Environmental Protection Fund’s Parks and Trails Partnership Grants program to build a wheelchair accessible trail from the parking lot to the lakeshore, including a new kiosk at the entrance to the park and signage about the history and ecology of the Mexico Point State Park at various points along the trail. We have worked diligently over the last two years to bring this project to fruition. The Friends of Mexico Point Park were required to raise an additional $3,990 in matching funds, and with the help of many generous donors and volunteers who have donated both time and money, we were able to contribute more than triple that amount! Our newest trail will finally be finished later this month.
The new trail will not only be more accessible to people in wheelchairs but will also provide attractive educational signage about the Point’s role in the Revolutionary War and about Mexico Point Club, the luxury hotel that flourished on the point in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The new kiosk will include a large map of the park indicating points of interest. Additional signage will provide information about the plants and animals that thrive at the park. Each sign includes one or more QR codes so that visitors can either read the information on the sign or hear about it from our talented narrators, Omen Sade and Nik Magill. The trail culminates in a new raised-bed butterfly garden designed and created by Terry Clarcq, with a variety of flowering plants to provide flowers throughout the spring, summer and fall to attract butterflies and other pollinators.
Please join us as we celebrate Mexico Point Park’s newest trail!
