With summer in full swing, the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario Partnership For Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO PRISM) urges outdoor enthusiasts to take action to protect their favorite outdoor spaces.
Consumers can take part in activities like hikes, paddles, invasive species removals and more by taking the Pledge To Protect.
In their most recent blog, SLELO PRISM provided tips to enjoy the outdoors while protecting outdoor spaces. To prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, boaters should thoroughly clean, drain and dry their equipment. Hikers are advised to use boot brushes and check their pets for seeds and ticks after excursions.
Travelers should inspect their vehicles for the invasive spotted lantern fly, threatening agriculture and forests. Campers are reminded to use local or certified heat-treated firewood to prevent the spread of wood-borne pest like the emerald ash borer.
People are encouraged to sign up for the initiative online at iPledgeToProtect.org. During signup, select from five areas of action: Lands and Trails, Gardens, Forests, Waters and Community. After signup, they become a "Protector" and receive monthly email blogs showcasing simple actions to prevent the spread of invasive species while enjoying the outdoors, or species to look out for throughout the year.
"Summer is one of the busiest outdoor seasons and therefore poses the highest risk for invasive species," said Rob Williams, Program Director of SLELO PRISM. "By participating in the Pledge To Protect program, each of us can play a crucial role in preventing their spread and protecting our favorite areas."
