The Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center will be presenting several guided snowshoe hikes this coming month.

The first will take place on Wednesday, January 10th, at 10:00 a.m. Educators will go over the basics of snowshoes, then the group will head out on their hike. This is a great program for those looking for a peaceful, morning walk in the woods. Participants may bring their own snowshoes or borrow the facilities – there is no additional fee to use the Center’s snowshoes.

On Sunday, January 14th at 9:00 a.m., environmental educators will be leading a program about the Science of Snow. Learn what exactly a snowflake is, how it’s formed, and how no two snowflakes are alike – just like fingerprints! There is a lot of science that goes into such a little snowflake that will be discussed and observed through a microscope. This program will also include a make-and-take craft.

There will be another guided snowshoe hike program on Saturday, January 20th at 10:00 a.m. Embark on a snowshoe hike through the woodlands with the educator using the sights and sounds of winter to guide the journey. If there is not enough snow to snowshoe, the group will go out for a winter hike and learn about winter ecology.

Please dress appropriately for whatever the weather may be! Wearing winter boots or winter shoes that are flat are recommended so they can easily be strapped in. Feel free to bring your own snowshoes or borrow the Center’s - there is no additional fee to use the facility's snowshoes.

The fee for these programs is only $4 per person, or $12 for a family. Children under the age of three are free! Preregistration is requested.

These programs are designed for nature lovers of all ages. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Find registration and more information on this program and others at http://thatscooperativeextension.org/events. Even if you aren’t able to attend the program, trails at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. There is no parking fee, and there is a map of the trails when you arrive.
