The Town of Schroeppel Historical Society hosted author Susan P. Gateley on May 21.
Gateley has authored several books on the history of Lake Ontario and two historical fiction novels, The Widow Maker, and her newest, Shifting Winds, a sequel to her previous work.
Gateley presented a slide show of current styles of sailboats on Lake Ontario and those of previous centuries- particularly that of the late 1800’s, the setting of her novels.
She talked about how in her fictional writing, she took inspiration from real people and events of the time frame. Her fictional character, Mollie McIntyre, resembles a historical woman who became captain of her own schooner on the lake after the death of her husband. Her adventures inspired some of the adventures of Mollie and the idea of a female captain in the late 1800s. Susan captivated her audience with the true tales woven throughout the evening influencing her own fictional characters.
To pick up Susan Gateley’s books, you can check out Rivers End Bookstore in Oswego or go the https://www.susanpgateley.com.
The Town of Schroeppel Historical Society will be hosting their next event on June 18 at 7 pm. Jeffery Ludwig, from the William Seward House in Auburn, will be giving a presentation about William Seward’s race to the Governor’s mansion. The Town of Schroeppel Historic Society is located at the intersections of Route 57 and Route 264 in Phoenix.
