The Oswego Buccaneer Booster Club has been helping out the student athletic programs for over 40 years. It holds events, such as the upcoming Golf Tournament, in order to raise money for both the Oswego Middle School and the Oswego High School.

“The mission of the Boosters is to support all our student athletes, coaches and student athletic programs,” President of the Boosters Judy Queale-Dunsmoor said. “And to increase school spirit throughout the district.”

There are 11 people on the Buccaneer Booster’s board but over 200 members total including corporations. Queale-Dunsmoor has been part of the Boosters Club for six years, while Vice President Pete Galletta has been a member for two.

“We get the parents involved, we get the community involved,” Galletta said. “We have support with them to help fund the teams and the athletes for special events whether it be tournaments, draw interest, school spirit and camaraderie, helping with supplies they might need, help raise money, and do anything we can for the teams, coaches and athletes.”

“I think it’s also nice that it gives parents that are involved and anyone that is involved a chance to work collaboratively with the athletic director, the coaches, the administration and the students,” Queale-Dunsmoor said.

The Booster Club does many events throughout the year to raise funds for the athletes or simply raise some school spirit. One event includes “Capture the Cup,” which is against the Fulton school district. Another event is “Drop and Swap,” which will happen on Aug. 19. This event requires participate to bring in their old sporting equipment that they don’t use anymore so new student athletes can have what they need.

The big event The Buccaneer Booster Club is focusing on is the Golf Tournament which is taking place on Aug. 16. Teams of four will compete at Battle Island State Park. The cost is $300 per team and the deadline to sign up is Aug. 1. Lunch will be included and there will be a prize awarded to the winning team. The limit is 25 teams and it is first come first serve. To register to participate, call Galletta at (315) 720-3876.

The Buccaneer Boosters Club does a lot of good for the Oswego school district. It funds the Athlete of the Month to give excellent students some recognition. It funds the Hall of Fame, helped get new speakers for the pool, helped secure weight room equipment and helped fund the new Buccaneers mascot on top of all the events it holds every year.

The Buccaneer Boosters Club is always looking for people to join. It meets the second Monday of each month at the high school. It’s just $10 a year to be a part of an organization that does so much to help the school athletics. To join, go online at http://oswego.org/departments.cfm?subpage=7404. Or you can contact Jim Muckey at Tmuckey@twcny.rr.com

“People get an opportunity to support things that affect all our students and our students athletes,” Queale-Dunsmoor said. “It helps give you a voice.”
