Thomas J. Halpin, 87, of Oswego passed away Friday afternoon at St. Luke Health Services, Inc.

He was born in Oswego and was the son of the late Robert D. and Irene Gilbert Halpin. Mr. Halpin served in the US Army in Korea. His last assignment was at White Sands missile proving grounds in New Mexico. He was a graduate of St. John’s School and the Oswego High School.

Mr. Halpin had been employed as a draftsman at Fitzgibbons Boiler, Cyclotherm and retired from Oswego County. He had served as an Alderman for 26 years in Oswego and as President of the Common Council for over eight years. Mr. Halpin was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #227 and the 4th degree Assembly, American Legion, Elks lodge #271 of Oswego, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Oswego.

Tom was a Communicant of St. Mary’s Church. He enjoyed gardening, rollerblading and ice skating, antiques and woodwork, and caring for his many cats. He especially enjoyed the quiet beauty of Oswego sunsets.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Irene Smith, of Oswego and several nieces and nephews, Peter (Mary) Smith, Thomas Gregory (Jody) Smith, Dr. Joseph M. Smith, Linda (Daniel) Halpin Walker and Pam (Daniel) Halpin O’Neill.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert G. Halpin, two nieces Margaret (Megs) Smith and Susan Halpin.

Funeral services will be 9:00AM Tuesday from the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home and at 9:30AM in St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Calling hours Monday 4-7PM at the funeral home.
