Write a commentIn recognition of Veterans Small Business Week, AmeriCU would like to present local veteran and entrepreneur, Mr. Chris Shutts.
Chris Shutts entered the Marine Corps in 1994 as an Infantry Heavy Machine Gunner then entered Security Forces training as a Rapid Response Team member stationed at Marine Corp Security Force Battalion in Kings Bay, Georgia. After serving for four years, Shutts left to help his father in the family business; Shutts Lumber Company.
Shutts was building storage sheds and sawing lumber for the next three years. Then 9/11 happened and he felt compelled to leave his father's business and serve in a different capacity, by working within security at the Nine Mile Nuclear plant.
“At the time (shortly after 9/11), security people at the plant were in high demand” Shutts explained.
Shutts found stability in income but not in his creativity. In 2006 he started his own company, C. Shutts Custom Built Buildings. He began producing high quality sheds out of rough cut lumber. Shutts created an environment of strong values with a high work ethic within his company, believing that there was true value in your word as well as your handshake.
"Since 2006, we have grown every year and recently added a sawmill,so now we are able to perform every aspect of the order, including selecting the proper lumber, sawing, and overseeing every aspect of the customers order with confidence. The sawmill has been a tremendous improvement in our ability to serve our customers. We believe in producing the highest quality shed buildings at an affordable price point. From small tool sheds to large camps, barns and garages. In the beginning of building my company (in our first year), we built only ten sheds but the next year we built thirty! Last year we built eighty, nearly two sheds per week and two hundred and fifty thousand feet of lumber. We offer two styles; Gambrel and Saltbox with two different sidings; one which is very similar to vinyl home siding, in sizes from 6 ' x 8 ' up to home size buildings."
Shutts went on to say: “Satisfied customers and great reviews, have been our main marketing strategy but we are utilizing social media as well but my passion is in building and that is what I want my customers to see.”
