In recognition of Veterans Small Business Week, AmeriCU would like to present local veteran and entrepreneur, J Vasquez.

Meet J Vasquez, former US Marine, who served from 1999 though 2006... 6 years of active duty, and 2 years of Individual Ready Reserve.

While in the Marine Corps, Vasquez served as a Heavy Machine Gunner in the Infantry. Shortly after joining FMF, he was deployed to Okinawa Japan with the 1st Battalion 6th Marines for six months, training in other SE Asian countries. He returned back to Camp Lejeune and detached to II MEF aboard the USS Gunston Hall for UNITAS and West African Training in South America and South Africa up the Western Coast in 2001. He returned for another deployment back Okinawa Japan for an additional 6 months in 2002. After returning from Japan for the second time while on Christmas and New Years Leave, Congress and the Commandant of the Marine Corps enacted Stop-Loss on Various Military Occupational Specialties, mostly infantry and direct support personnel. Instead of separating, Vasquez went Temporary Travel Duty to 2nd Battalion 6th Marines to help with their inexperienced personnel, as they were in a rebuilding phase and tasked to go to Iraq for Iraqi Freedom.

The Ship Yard is a third party shipping company, that sells Fedex, UPS, USPS, and DHL. Vasquez started out in this genre of business working for another company called Pack-n-Mail. A few short years working at Pack-n-Mail, the owner informed Vasquez that she was closing her shop and moving leaving the area. With a SUNY Oswego Business degree and three years experience behind him, Vasquez decided that now was the time, and this was the opportunity he wanted.

“I didn’t want to be franchised with the possibility of someone else telling me how to operate my store,” Vasquez said, “so I decided against buying her out and starting from the ground up. I opened The Ship Yard business in Oswego, NY, Dec. 5th, 2016.”

The labeling and packaging can be done on site and they offer options for all four major carriers in order that customers can make an informed decision. Any package that postage is purchased through The Ship Yard, is also kept on file for potential future shipping needs. That allows for an easier, more convenient, shipping experience, next time. All issues that may arise from transportation is handled through The Ship Yard, so the customer does not have to go through the headache of dealing with lost or damaged packages.

"I believe that good service is key in all small, hometown businesses," Vasquez said, "and service is what we do best."

Vasquez will also assist customers with their prepaid returns, utilizing any of the four carriers. LEO, Veterans, Active Duty and First Responders receive 10% off shipping, every day.

The Ship Yard is located at 184 Water St. (south) in Oswego, NY. For more information, visit them at https://www.oswegoshipyard.com/ or call 315-216-4863. Hours during COVID are Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 6 PM
