Write a commentSUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery has recently collaborated with the Oswego Public Library on an exhibit, Watercolors of Oswego County: by Eugenijs Kaskin.
This exhibit features several watercolors painted by well-known local artist Eugenijs Kaskin from the Gallery’s collection. These pieces can be viewed all year round during the operations hours of the Oswego Public Library from April 16, 2025 - April 16, 2026.
Eugenijs Kaskin was originally born in Riga, Latvia in 1912 and gave up a career as a gymnastics teacher after being injured in an air raid in 1944. While recovering in the hospital, he became interested in art and eventually immigrated to the United States in 1951. After settling in the area, Kaskin developed into a well-known artist in Oswego County and became extremely prolific in his depictions of his environment. SUNY Oswego Tyler Art Gallery acquired a large collection of his pieces, and through the new Community Collection Loan Program, is able to display them at the library.
The Community Collection Loan Program is a new project designed to identify artworks in the Tyler Art Gallery’s permanent collection that have local cultural value to loan to off campus entities. Kaskin’s paintings fit perfectly into this iniative as they feature local landmarks from the region as well as scenery from the Oswego’s past that have changed beyond recognition.
