The spirit of empowerment, community and camaraderie was on full display June 29, as 21 teams of women teed off at Battle Island State Park Golf Course for the Second Annual Women Supporting Women in Oswego County – All Women’s Captain and Crew Golf Tournament.
The event raised $5,300 which was donated to the Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance (OCECA).
“We’ve participated in many golf tournaments in the past, which gave us the exciting idea of hosting our own all-women’s golf tournament centered around the theme of ‘Women Empowering Women,’” said event coordinator Sandy Shue.
Founded by Shue and Lynn Kistner of Canalview Travel Service, Inc., along with Lisa Reed, the tournament was created to bring women together in support of other women, all while raising funds for local non-profit organizations either run by women or that benefit women and children.
“From the start, we wanted to dedicate our tournaments to organizations that directly serve women and children in need,” she continued. “The first event was such a tremendous success, it inspired us to organize another one and I’m thrilled to share that this second tournament was also a huge triumph! We are already looking forward to our third annual tournament in 2026.”
Each year, tournament proceeds are donated to a different non-profit agency. Last year’s recipient was Kristina’s House of Hope, a vital resource for women experiencing homelessness.
This year’s event raised $5,300 to support OCECA, a division of Integrated Community Planning of Oswego County, Inc. (ICPOC) that promotes efforts to strengthen and support families with young children.
OCECA initiatives include Oswego County Help Me Grow, which provides developmental screenings and early connections to services; the Oswego County Diaper Bank, which addresses basic needs and diaper insecurity; Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing Oswego County, which promotes early language and literacy development; and a Parent Advisory Council that ensures family voice is embedded in early childhood planning.
Through collaboration with more than 50 local organizations, OCECA works to build a comprehensive, equitable system that ensures all young children and families in Oswego County have what they need to thrive.
Tournament organizers are already looking ahead to next year’s event and hope to grow it even further. For more information or to get involved in next year’s planning, sponsorship or team registration, please contact Sandy Shue at sandy@canalviewtravel.com.
