The rapidly approaching fall semester at SUNY Oswego brings A F.A.T 5k fundraiser for Ataxia Research, held Sept. 26 by the college’s Pre-Healthcare Club in the local community.

“The F.A.T. run is the acronym for Fight Ataxia Together,” Said Club President Iain Thompson. Thompson, a student at SUNY Oswego is also a certified personal trainer who works at Stability Fitness, and is currently training someone who is affected by Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA).

“Friedreich’s Ataxia is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder.” stated Thompson. Thompson also said all proceeds will be going to Friedreich Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). If you go to the following link: http://fara.convio.net/site/TR?fr_id=1150&pg=entry there are a variety of different ways to participate, such as creating a team, joining a team, registering or donating. “Every dollar counts.” Thompson said.

Currently, F.A.T 5k has raised $1,145 and is at 22 percent of their goal. Thompson also said the reason for the run is to help raise funds for a disorder that does not get much funding, and also to bring awareness to the disorder.
