A Day of Birding with iHeart Oswego Photographers

You might wonder what iHeart Oswego Photographers do when we are not photographing events.

Mostly we go out and take photos that are our individual passion or which will hone our skill set, which can be landscapes, night photography, architecture, people, wildlife, or what every catches their eye.

At our last meeting Joe Schrio, our newest volunteer photographer at iHeartOswego, had asked me if they could tag along to photograph birds one weekend. Of course I said yes, as we all consider ourselves like a family, always willing to share our knowledge, skill set and help one an another.

7:30 AM on a Saturday, a very cold Saturday, the two of us set off to see what we could find around our little mecca, the City of Oswego. You see we do live in a very unique area, you only have to take the time on your drive around our city to stop, look and listen.

After a trip along the accessible areas of our shoreline, a stop along the side of the road on our way out to Rice Creek (where you can view birds at a feeder from inside to stay warm) we ended up spotting a total of 17 species of birds within four hours.

Highlights that day were a Snowy Owl, (a first for Schiro and what fellow birders call a “lifer” meaning once in a lifetime) a Pileated Woodpecker, a speedy Coopers Hawk soaring into the birds feeders looking for a meal at Rice Creek, and a juvenile Bald Eagle at a unsuccessful attempt at grabbing a Cormorant for it's lunch.

It was a very good day,we enjoyed our little adventure around the city! The next time you're parked down by Wrights Landing or at Fort Ontario to enjoy the view, take the time to look around you and listen, you never know what you might see! Scroll down to see the photo gallery from this day's shoot.
