An air quality alert remains in effect for Oswego County through 11:59 p.m. tonight, Aug. 6.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) issued today’s alert based on fine particles in the atmosphere.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Oswego County’s air quality is “unhealthy for sensitive groups” with an index of 130 as of 9 a.m. today, Aug. 6.

Residents who have underlying medical conditions or who are more sensitive to particle pollution may benefit from reducing their outdoor exposure until the air quality improves.

In particular, those with heart or lung diseases such as asthma or COPD, along with older adults or children and teens may be especially affected by air pollutants.

People with unusual sensitivity may want to limit their time outdoors or choose less strenuous activities (like walking, instead of running), so they are not breathing as hard.

Oswego County Public Health Director Vera Dunsmoor encourages everyone to continue checking the air quality index and keep health conditions in mind while planning outdoor activities today.

The health department continues to monitor the air quality index across the county and residents will be notified if there are any changes. People can monitor the county’s air quality status at https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Oswego&state=NY&country=USA.
