Alma Longley, 89, a resident of Oswego, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at St. Luke's Health Services.
Born in Sterling, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Ethel (Groves) Irwin.
She was a member of the VFW #5885 Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the Oswego Hospital Auxiliary and RSVP.
She was the office manager at Dr. Julius Weinreb DDS for more than 50 years.
Over the years, she knitted hats and mittens for the Salvation Army and Oswego Hospital for their use at Christmas time.
For many years, she was known as the "Doll Lady" at the Oswego Hospital as she made dolls for all of the children who were having surgery.
Alma was the recipient of the "Simple Acts of Kindness Club" sponsored by the Oswego County Savings Bank and Palladium Times for her dedication to those who were less fortunate.
She is survived by one son, David (Judy) Longley; a son-in-law, August Gentile Jr.; one sister, Betty Cole; her grandchildren, August (Kathleen) Gentile III, David (Colleen) Longley, and Jennifer Longley; and great-grandchildren, Austin Gentile and Aidan Longley.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Longley; a daughter, Elizabeth Gentile; and eight brothers and sisters.
Calling hours will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, March 29, at Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., in Oswego, with a service to follow.
Spring burial will be in Sterling Center Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke's Nursing Home and especially those who cared for Alma on the seventh floor.
