Become a Senior Companion and Help a Friend

Serve as a friend and companion to older neighbors, become part of a team that makes sure older adults can live in their own homes for as long as possible!

In their 2025 Data Books, the NYS Office for the Aging reported that between Oswego, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Madison counties approximately 50,270 adults over the age of 60 live alone. InterFaith Works of Central New York’s Senior Companions have served a number of these peers and elders throughout Central New York; helping them continue to stay independent longer.

Through the Senior Companion Program, a federally funded initiative through AmeriCorps Seniors, our Companions (volunteers age 55 and over) assist other older adults (60 years and over) with activities that have become challenging with age, including:

  • Friendly visits and companionship to reduce feelings of isolation
  • Transportation to medical appointments and grocery shopping
  • Assistance with meal preparation and light housekeeping
  • Medication reminders and help with daily activities
  • Respite care for family caregivers

Senior Companions receive orientation and training, travel reimbursement, and create life-long bonds with their clients and other like-minded volunteers. They also receive a small tax-free hourly stipend if they meet certain income requirements.

The Senior Companion Program provides services in Oswego, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Madison counties. For more information, please visit www.interfaithworkscny.org or contact the InterFaith Works’ Senior Companion Program Volunteer Coordinator, Carrie Frank, at CFrank@ifwcny.org or 315-449-3552 ext. 226.

InterFaith Works of Central New York’s mission is to affirm the dignity of each person and every faith tradition, build racial and religious equity, and create bridges of understanding among us.
