Betty J. Backus, 89, a lifelong resident of Oswego, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014 at St. Luke Health Services in Oswego, with her loving family at her side.
Born in Oswego, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie (Geers) Zischke. Mrs. Backus was employed at Woolworth's, W.T. Grant's, and retired from JC Penney. She also worked at Oswego Speedway for 20 years. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and traveling on her yearly bus trips. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. Her husband of 60 years, William W. Backus, Sr., passed away in January of 2009.
She is survived by a son, William (Cheryl) Backus of Clay; three grandchildren, Kristin Backus of Williamstown, Nichole (Gary) Williams of Mattydale, and Jeremy Hantke of Syracuse; along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Thursday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00pm Wednesday, at the funeral home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
