Write a commentCalling all gardening enthusiasts. Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Oswego County will hold a workshop entitled “Planting the Seed: An Introduction to Establishing a Community Garden” at the Mexico VFW at 5930 Scenic Ave. (State Route 3) just north of the village of Mexico, NY.
This educational program will take place on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 from 6-8 pm. All individuals interested in learning about establishing a community garden are encouraged to attend.
Topics to be discussed at the informational program on March 8th include:
• Establishment, day to day management, long term sustainability of community gardens.
• Successes and challenges of community gardens.
• Additional training and resources available on community gardens.
Interest in community gardens has increased in recent years, aimed at promoting health and nutrition through the production of fresh, locally grown food. Community gardens have also been shown to connect, educate, and encourage entrepreneurial projects. Community garden advocates have stated that “through gardening, people don’t just learn how to grow vegetables. They also learn how to work together to solve problems. People work towards improving the health and vitality of their community.”
Previous gardening experience is not required. CCE Oswego County staff and Cornell University Garden Based Learning Coordinator, Lori Brewer, will discuss methods with participants to make their gardening experience positive. Jonathan Schell, Agriculture Team Coordinator, CCE Oswego County, stated, “We are pleased to be able to provide technical expertise through this educational workshop, and to help with garden planning.” The cost for the workshop is $10.
