Write a commentCharles E. Riley Elementary fourth-graders recently participated in a collaborative videoconference, which brought classrooms in Oswego and Onondaga counties together to share information learned about the Erie Canal.
Teachers Morganne Atutis and Shannon Wells worked with CER library media specialist Molly Clark and their students to prepare a Jeopardy game, as part of the interactive learning experience. The students had recently studied all about the Erie Canal and were eager to offer a fun, historical gaming experience for other fourth-graders in the region.
Joined by fourth-grade classrooms in Fulton, Hannibal and East Syracuse, the CER fourth-graders also played along in their Jeopardy game, which included the following categories: travel, business, inventions, history and construction, among others. Favorite Erie Canal facts revealed from the game included: it cost $5 to ship a ton of wheat from Buffalo to New York City after the canal was constructed and an aqueduct is a type of bridge that carries boats over rivers.
Following each school’s presentation of information learned, students in the classrooms had the opportunity to both ask and answer Erie canal-related questions.
