Women's Lacrosse Clinches Berth Behind Garrett's Five Goals

Women's Lacrosse Clinches Berth Behind Garrett's Five Goals

The Oswego State women's lacrosse clinched a SUNYAC Championship berth for the second-straight year with a 10-7 come-from-behind win at Buffalo State on Tuesday afternoon. Oswego has earned a home playoff game as it will be either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed, depending on the outcome of the remaining conference games this week. The Lakers are now 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the league while the Bengals drop to 6-9, 3-4.

Oswego scored seven of the contest's last eight goals to erase a three-goal, second-half deficit. Freshman Montana Garrett took over during that stretch, scoring five of the Lakers' seven goals, including the final three to put the game out of reach. On the final goal by Garrett – her 28th of the year – Teresa Shattuck distributed the assist to her teammate. It was the sophomore's 53rd assist of the season, tying her sister Erannan Shattuck's single-season program record, set last season.

Joining Garrett with multiple goal on the day were classmate Toni Laneve and junior Gemme O'Kane. Laneve scored the game's first two goals to put the Lakers ahead 2-0 just 1:38 into the tilt. O'Kane's two goals both came in the second half and off passes from senior Kendall Appelbaum. The junior added a third point on the day with an assist on Laneve's first tally. Shattuck had a goal to go with her record-tying assist while Zeina Akl also helped on a Laker score.

Defensively, Danielle Walker and goalie Angela Ponto each caused two Buffalo State turnovers. The pair led the way on loose balls as well, as Ponto scooped six and Walker picked up three. Ponto made 10 saves in between the pipes as well, including two late in the contest after Oswego had knotted the score at 7-7.

The Lakers won eight draws on the day, as Shattuck controlled a team-high three. Walker had the second-most with two while O'Kane, Laneve and Appelbaum had one apiece.

Oswego will be back in action on Tuesday, May 2 for the first round of the SUNYAC Championship at Laker Turf Stadium. Seeding, opponent and game time will be determined after the SUNYAC contests conclude this weekend.
