Oswego's Fort Ontario is joining in the statewide effort, First Day Hikes, for the first time. The program offers free looks at our parks, historic sites and some museums.
The tour for the fort starts at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1. First Day Hikes also offers tours to Jamesville Clark Reservation at noon, Sackets Harbor Battlefield at 11 a.m., Taughhannock Falls State Park at 2 p.m. and Wellesley Island at 1 p.m.
Even though the programs are free, some require advance registration (and offer freebies for signing up), so check the www.nysparks.com website.
