More than 4,300 Oswego County students and their families from three school districts received a grant from Constellation to participate in the One School One Book Program with Read to Them.

Constellation Energy awarded $36,000 to Read to Them to sponsor the Oswego, Mexico, and Fulton School Districts, and provide the opportunity to participate in their One School One Book Program – a school wide family literacy program designed to strengthen the educational connection between home and school from Richmond, Virginia-based Read to Them. Constellation Energy is the proud sponsor of this program across Oswego County.

One School, One Book kicked off in September and October for the Fulton and Oswego School District. Mexico plans to launch their program soon. During this time, elementary school students were involved in school and community events both in-person and virtually.

“The program not only enhances students’ language skills, but it shows them reading is fun in an atmosphere that strengthens family and community interactions,” says Read to Them’s New York Regional Representative Mary Curcio. “With the support of Constellation Energy, elementary schools across Oswego County received a book for every student and complimentary staff copies, family and classroom literacy activities, teacher resources, and family and community engagement tools. These resources turned a book into a community experience so everyone could enjoy and share the story.”

Each student in the Fulton City School District received a copy of the same book, Dragons in a Bag by Zetta Elliott.

Desiree Schepp librarian at Volney Elementary in Oswego County, shared, “Our experience with Dragon's in a Bag was truly joyous, resulting in a palpable wave of excitement and shared community experience across the entire district. It was wonderful to see students buzzing about the book and engaging in meaningful discussions with their peers. This program was an undeniable success in igniting a passion for reading.”

Carin Reeve, director of literacy at the Oswego School District shared that their students who read The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, hosted a masked reader celebration, participated in reading with a therapy dog, produced artwork, hosted trivia contests, and had guest readers.

“At Constellation we strive to make an impact in the communities where our employees live and work. We are proud to sponsor One School, One Book because it is helping to instill a love of reading and encouraging our young people who will become the future leaders of our communities,” said Timothy Peter, Site Vice President, Nine Mile Point Clean Energy Center.
