Georgiana Elizabeth Powers, 90, died December 28, 2017 in Oswego, NY.
Born October 5, 1927 in Manhattan, NYC, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Laga) Ryzak.
She was the widow of Dr. Harold O. Powers. Surviving are her children, Marjorie Leone Baldwin, Robert Harold Powers, Wesley Powers, and Laura Powers Rada; her grandchildren, Aaron and David Baldwin, Ethan and Emily Powers, and Jillian Wray; and her great-grandchildren, Audrey, Zachary, and Nathan Baldwin.
Mrs. Powers was educated at Julia Richmond High School, Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing in Manhattan, and attended Hunter College in Manhattan. She worked as a registered nurse and head nurse at various hospitals in Manhattan, Denver General in Colorado and UCLA hospitals in San Francisco, CA.
Georgiana was Administrative Assistant of the Department of Pathology at Roosevelt Hospital, Manhattan. After moving to Oswego, she worked at the Oswego Hospital for several years, taught in the LPN program at BOCES, and was head nurse at Harwood Nursing Home before retiring.
Mrs. Powers worked as a volunteer with the Red Cross Bloodmobiles for 25 years; was a member of the Leighton Home and School Association, a past member of the Oswego Mayor’s Senior Advisory Committee, and a volunteer in the Extended Care Unit at Oswego Hospital. She regularly participated in the St. Mary’s Bridge Marathon as both treasurer and scorekeeper, and was a member of the Faculty Wives’ Bridge Club and the Eastern Star Victoria Chapter. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church. She enjoyed plants, gardening and cooking.
As per Georgiana’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Nelson Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
