The Art Association of Oswego (AAO) is pleased to announce the upcoming opening of two new exhibitions: “Tribute to Charles Golden” and Kelley Sheldon’s “Fighting the Stroke”.

An opening reception for both exhibitions is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th, 7-9 pm. The exhibitions run through June 30th.

On display in the second floor Timothy McHenry Gallery is the work of Hasting artist Charles Taylor Golden who passed away in 2022 at the age of 78. Golden loved both making and teaching art. He explored many artistic mediums including photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, collage, jewelry making, printmaking and graphics. Making abstract art was his passion. Golden’s artwork evolved over time; learning from old ideas and exploring new ideas while participating in numerous art exhibitions. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and Master of Arts degree from SUNY Oswego and retired after teaching Art at Mexico Academy for 25 years.

Stated Golden, “I am fascinated with attempts to understand the complexities of our world— past, present and future. Fossils, ancient artifacts and discoveries in science, as one layer is peeled back, another is exposed. A new world lies hidden within. Like pieces of a puzzle, sometimes they fit and other times they remain a mystery. I try to bring this feeling of discovery into my art work. Rather than telling a story or creating a picture, I am presenting a unique visual experience, a series of events that exist only on my work surface. The story is then left for the viewer’s interpretation.”

Showing in the first floor’s Kirk Beason Gallery is Kelley Sheldon; a multidisciplinary Oswego artist who received a Master in Arts Teaching degree from SUNY Oswego. From a young age, she was captivated by art-making and honed her craft over the years to create unique and meaningful pieces. Sheldon strives to capture the beauty and essence of the world around her using light, color and composition. After a stroke in August 2023, she found the discipline and determination to successfully create her own narratives with true grit.

AAO is a non-profit organization that consistently contributes to Oswego’s cultural landscape. Public events include but are not limited to free art exhibitions and low-cost community art classes. Each week Art Association of Oswego’s Pottery Open Studio is offered Monday and Thursdays 5 -8pm and Open Painting Studio is offered Wednesdays at 10am. The Art Association of Oswego and the Frances Marion Brown Theater are located in Building 30 of the Fort Ontario complex across from the parking lot of the fort itself.
