Obituaries

Harold W. Nash, EdD, 89, Professor Emeritus, College at Oswego, NY, passed away on August 3rd, 2019.

He was born to Harold L. Nash and Katheryn E. Kane Nash on April 11th, 1930 in Huntington, Long Island.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Lorraine B. Porter Nash, son Martin A. Nash, son Timothy A. Nash (Cheri), grandchildren Ryan, Jayson, Allison, And Ian, sister Mary F. Orbaker, nephews, and a great nephew.
Harry graduated from West High School, Rochester, NY, Brockport, NY State Teachers College, Syracuse University, and Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn.

While in high school, Harry was a three-time City of Rochester Wrestling Champion and a two-time Section 5 Wrestling Champion. In college, he was a goalkeeper and a Co-Captain on the Brockport Soccer Team.

During the Korean War, he served in the US Marine Corps in June 1950 - February 1952. His duty posts were Parris Island, SC, San Diego, CA, and Camp LeJeune, NC.

His teaching experiences were in the Greece Central School District (Rochester NY), Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tenn), Austin Peay State College (Clarkesville, Tenn), College at Brockport, and College at Oswego.

While teaching at the College at Oswego in the Elementary Education Department, he organized and operated the Sodus Migrant Project from 1968 - 1972. That project was described in the February 8, 1970 Congressional Record. Teacher Education students traveled by bus from Oswego to Sodus Central Schools. From 1963 - 1966, he served as the Assistant Coach for the College Mens Soccer Team.
From January - May 1982, he served as a Visiting Scholar studying and teaching autistic children at the University of North Carolina. In 1975 and 1988, he was listed among the Outstanding Educators in the United States.

Harry was a long time member of the Oswego Episcopal Church of the Resurrection serving as a Vestry member, Reader, and a Chalice Server.

In 1964, Harry became one of the original members of the Oswego Minor Hockey Association Board of Directors. He found it fascinating and rewarding to see that organization grow over the years.
June 18, 1955, St. James Church, Batavia NY was the wedding of Harry and Lorraine. That summer was the first of many summers working together at Brockport’s College Totem Camp, Harrisville, NY for children and college physical education students.

For over thirty years, Harry studied our brain, taught college classes, and wrote articles about our brain. He was the author of Our Aging Brain, Brain Views, and Three Good Men. He was a brain columnist for Oswego Palladium Times for five years.

Among Harry’s long time strong interests were riding his bicycles, playing euchre, poker, and pinochle with friends. Riding his bicycle round-trip into Canada, in 1981, near Westport and Buck Lake was a big highlight.

Harry and Lorraine established at the Nash/Porter Scholarship at the College at Brockport for students in elementary and secondary education and health and physical education.

On August 14th, 2019 A Memorial Service will be held at Springside at Seneca Hill, 10 County Route 45A from 12-3 pm. Burial will be held privately at Rural Cemetery. Nelson Funeral Home has care of his arrangements.
