Cats Discover Rabid Bat In Mexico, Oswego County

The Oswego County Health Department reported today that a bat found in a town of Mexico home has tested positive for rabies. As a result, the health department is investigating family members to determine if there have been any exposures to the bat. Also, three house cats must be placed in six-month quarantine as a result of their exposures.

The Oswego County Health Department today reported two new cases of rabies in Oswego County. A raccoon in the City of Oswego and a skunk in the Town of Schroeppel have tested positive for rabies. The raccoon was located on East Fourth Street in Oswego, in the neighborhood of Fort Ontario State Historic Site. The skunk was found near county Route 54 in Schroeppel.

According to the Oswego County Health Department, 74 lab-confirmed cases of the flu had been reported in Oswego County as of Monday, Jan. 23. More than half of those cases were reported in children 18 years of age or younger. Last week, the number of flu cases reported doubled compared to the number of cases reported the previous week.
