I Heart Oswego is known for offering a variety of services from marketing to web development to local business but it also offers students the option of interning with a growing and flexible company.
Since its establishment in June 2012, the company has welcomed students from SUNY Oswego into its offices and departments.
To founders Victoria and Phil Gailinas, the involvement of students offers a fresh take on projects and is mutually beneficial for both parties. The goal is to create a learning environment for both the students and full-time staff that is comfortable and open to new ideas.
All majors are welcomed, which is the case for Raven Reese who is an English major with a biology and women’s studies minor. But she soon found that she fit into the workplace.
“The internship has really taught me more about social media and how to use these tools for marketing and advertisement,” Reese said. “ This is likely going to be very helpful for a future job, at least, because it'll improve my skills, my resume and I hope that it may aid in my goal to be a writer, whether it be for a newspaper, online forum, or blog.”
Part of her duties included managing the events page on the website and Facebook posts throughout the day.
For Olga Reyes, stumbling into I Heart Oswego has led to an established future career. A journalism and creative writing major with an English minor, Reyes discovered the company through a journalism class. When she needed a summer internship she decided to approach Victoria Gailinas.
“My internship turned into something miraculous, for a lack of a better term. I went into the office with the intention of completing a summer internship but I ended up staying at I Heart for the fall and spring as well,” Reyes said. “ I Heart then offered me an official spot on the team. What went from an internship turned to a full time job. It's helping my career goals by giving me a chance to put my journalism knowledge to the test.”
As an intern, Reyes researched and wrote articles, posted daily events and ensured the online content was well done.
“Soon, I’ll be hiring interns and I will train them to write adequate and well-written pieces to post on our site,” Reyes said.
I Heart Oswego accepts interns throughout the year and encourages anyone interested to contact them for further information.
