Born in Indianapolis, February 8, 1928, she was the daughter of Charles and Miriam Davis. The family moved to Oswego in 1937. Jane attended St Paul’s Academy and Oswego High School before attending Syracuse University. Jane met Harold R. VanOpdorp whom she married in September 1949 before moving to Washington DC where she worked as a government civilian on the Baltic Desk.
Jane was a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the League of Women Voters (LWV), Hospital Auxiliary, Oswego Players, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD), and the View Arts Center. She was an active member of the YMCA and Life Member of the Oswego Country Club. In addition to her community involvement, Jane was an avid golfer, an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed needle work, reading, crosswords and cooking. She is well remembered for her delicious penuche cakes.
Having raised a beautiful family, Jane was a care giver for over 20 years after which she traveled the world reaching five of the seven continents. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Miriam Davis, husband, Harold R VanOpdorp, sisters Miriam D Kashiwa and Charlene A Davis, her eldest son Peter J VanOpdorp and granddaughter Amy G VanOpdorp. Jane is survived by her remaining children, Koert (Lisa) VanOpdorp, Sally VanOpdorp, John (Kris) VanOpdorp, August (Joyce) VanOpdorp, Dr. Miriam VanOpdorp, Anne (Bill) Cowham, Harold R (Rebecca) VanOpdorp, Jr, 14 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Oswego with burial to follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to charities supporting the homeless.
Arrangements are in the care of the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, Oswego.
