Joan Ann Sheffield Cappell died March 21, 2026, in Port Orange, Florida, with family by her side.
Joan was born the eldest child of Macel and Thelma ( Peterson) Sheffield. She grew up on the Hall Road in Scriba, attended "the country school" and Fitzhugh Park, and was a 1957 graduate of Oswego High School. Joan devoted her career to nursing, graduating from LPN school in 1969, earning an AAS in Nursing in 1976, and graduating from Upstate Nurse Practitioner School in 1984. She was known to have an adventurous spirit and loved to travel, ultimately visiting Russia, where she had an affinity for the Romanov Royal family.
Joan is survived by 5 of her 6 children, Colette (John) Badger, of Oswego, Yvette (Joe) Sullivan of Durham NC, Harold Cappell, Erin (Steve) Sabatini and Gabrielle (Jeff) Caruso all of Oswego. 10 Grandchildren Emilie Losurdo, Victoria (Joe) Blazey. Mary Caroline (Ben) Losurdo-Holt, Kate Sullivan, Ali (Cody Ragsdal) Sullivan, Mark Raymer, Nicholas Cappell, Isabella Sabatini, Derek Sabatini and Serena Muckey, and 1 great-grandson Cole Losurdo-Rice. Sisters Kandis (Oliver) Hills of Port Orange Fl , Chere ( Mike) Shoemaker of Texas and sister-in-law Mary Sheffield of Oswego and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, Joan was predeceased by her daughter Suzette Cappell, brother Fred Sheffield and nephews Timothy and Gerald Rhinehart.
A celebration of life will held in Oswego this summer.
