You are cordially invited to join Oswego, Jefferson, Cayuga and Wayne counties, the City of Oswego, and federal representatives as they announce their proposal for a National Marine Sanctuary in the southeastern waters of Lake Ontario.

The press conference will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at the NYS Fairgrounds, adjacent to the Lakes of NY exhibit in the park near the Home Center building. In the event of inclement weather, the announcement will be moved to the nearby Chevy Court stage.

Scheduled speakers include Congressman John Katko, Oswego County Legislature Chairman Kevin Gardner, Oswego County Administrator Phil Church, Wayne County Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Steve LeRoy, Oswego Mayor Thomas Gillen, CNY Regional Planning Board program manager Jean Gleisner, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Regional Director Reed Bohne.

This event marks the culmination of several months of discussion between Jefferson, Oswego, Cayuga and Wayne counties and the City of Oswego on a project that could bring significant economic, educational and recreational benefits to the region. The proposal will be based on the vast cultural and historic resources that lie beneath the waters of Lake Ontario and the desire to promote, preserve and protect the region’s unique assets without interfering with other existing commercial and recreational activities.
