Joseph James Oleyourryk Jr., 77, of Oswego passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024.

Born in Oswego, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph J. Sr. and Elsie (DeHollender) Oleyourryk.

Joe was a graduate of Oswego High School.  He served in the US Army Reserves from 1971-1977. Joe earned his BA in Education from SUNY Oswego and his Masters from Eastern Washington State College in 1975.  While in college, Joe worked as a guard at Fort Ontario.

Joe’s dedication to education was unwavering.  He was a beloved teacher at Minetto Elementary School for 30 years, known as “Mr. O.”  He taught 6th grade and was a true educator, leaving a positive impact on the students he taught and touching many lives. His love for his profession was evident in his ability to make learning fun. 

In his retirement years, Joe volunteered for many organizations, including the Oswego County Board of Elections, the Oswego Town Historical Society, the Oswego Town Fire Department’s election of officers, Human Concerns, and the Oswego Teachers Credit Union.

Joe’s passions extended beyond his professional life.  He was an avid fan of all types of racing and a big history buff with an impressive collection to show for it.  His enthusiasm for these hobbies was infectious, and he often shared his knowledge with others.

Joe is survived by his brothers John J. and Louise (Arduini) Oleyourryk of Scriba, William and Nancy (McCloskey) Oleyourryk of Oswego, and Charles and Judy (Thompson)  of Oswego, as well as several loved nieces, nephews, and the Lenahan family.

Graveside services will be held at 11 am, on Friday, August 2nd at Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.. A date will be announced for burial at Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund will be established to honor Joe’s love for education.  Donations can be sent to Samuel J. Oleyourryk at 2325 County Route 7, Oswego NY 13126. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home
