Suzette Kimball (pictured above), acting director of the U.S. Geological Survey, celebrates the ceremonial christening of the Research Vessel Kaho in Oswego, with Capt. Terry Lewchanin looking on.

The new state-of-the art vessel is part of the Great Lakes Science Center’s research fleet and is based at the Oswego biological field station.

Named after an Ojibwe word meaning “searcher” or “hunter,” the Kaho replaces a 1961 vessel of the same name and sails Lake Ontario from April through November. Its scientists and crew members collect data on Lake Ontario’s deepwater ecosystems and share their research with a variety of local, state and federal environmental organizations.
